2003 Walter D Koenig 2004 Melanerpes formicivorus 1500 HNHR 6 June 920. Came to band the kids: d all 3 dead in nest! Unclear whether this is because they weren't brooded last night or what, and if so, why nobody posted, Bummer - but hopefully they're still OK for DNA. 15 June 1700. 2 new eggs; ① 23.4 x 26.4 ② 23.0 x 26.0. Maybe it; it seems as though they're incubating. 19 June 1000. Hole empty! Yet another failure. Still stored across here, though. 1 July 1430. And again: 2 fresh eggs: ① 23.5 x 19.8 ② 24.0 x 19.6. Maybe they can do better this time. 11 July 1600. 1 hatchling + 1 unhatched but developed egg. Band ~ 31 July. Stores: Yes. 21 July 1400. Banded the 1 kid here. 2004 3 May Starling nest w/ hatchlings in traditional nest hole. Set an ambush. 1945. Ambushed the ♀ (starling); squeezed her and cleaned out the hole (tagged #1327). 20 May Bird in hole (1327)! 1130. Checked hole: 3 fresh eggs (could still be laying). ① 23.3 x 20.1 ② 24.0 x 20.5 ③ 23.5 x 20.2. EHD ~ 31 May. 13 June Joey checked hatching sometime ago. This evening I came by to set an ambush, but upon opening the hole (~1900) found dead, well- picked-over nestling, (1 only?) Ants had gone nuts!
