2002 2003 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 150D HNHR 12 Apr Stores here, but noone in a hole. 7 May Still stores, plus 2 new good-looking holes. 30 May 1430. Still lots of stores; Where's their nest?? 2 June 930. Doug saw a bird go in the (low) hole, so I finally went up to check the hole (#291); it was filled with eaten acorns, lichen, + general mouse debris. I cleaned it out, so maybe they'll use it now? We'll see. 2003 7 Apr Bird in (new) hole in Main tree. 8 Apr 1700. Opened the hole (tagged #1327): 4 eggs incubated (!). Measured them: ① 24.6 x 20.1 ② 25.3 x 19.6 ③ 25.5 x 19.8 ④ 25.2 x 19.4. 10 Apr 1900. Roosting in the nest was or1-bm #3225 for sure! [illegible] 11 Apr 1415. Took the 4 eggs for exp #1 of the year. 15 Apr Eggs hatched this morning (or last night). Processed as #3768-3771. 28 Apr 1530. Checked tau (new) hole just for the heck of it: empty. 14 May 1315. Bird in same hole (#1327): 4 eggs, incubated! Excellent!. ① 24.7 x 20.0 ② 24.5 x 19.7 ③ 25.1 x 19.3 ④ 24.8 x 20.0. 22 May 1100. 3 kits, 2-3 do, + 1 unhatched + undeveloped egg (#2). Band ~ 9 June. 30 May 1945. 8 solid/light-dk #3225 roosted tonight in the nest. 5 June 1000. 2000. Noone roosted in the nest, but I could tell.
