2000 Waltford Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 1 3 May 1210. Opened old hole low in Tree#1 (hole#291). Eggs, fresh: 24.6 x 19.1 (marked #1). 9 May 900. 4 eggs. Measured another one: 25.6 x 19.0 mm. 19 May 1530, 4 babies (1 distinctly smaller, but still) OK); 3-4 do. Band ~ 6 June. 7 June Banded the 4 kits. Lots of stores left. 30 August Still lots of stores. 2001 4 April 1215 Bird in the (old) nest hole this morning, so I checked it: empty but in good shape. 9 April 1330. No one in the hole but I checked it anyway: empty. 27 April 1330. Bird in hole: 3 fresh eggs. Done? ① 25.1 x 20.5 ② 23.9 x 20.2 ③ 24.8 x 20.2 11 May 1615. Apparently not: now 4 eggs, at least one (the 4th!?) pipping. The 4th measured 25.5 x 20.1, by the way. All should hatch; band ~ 2 June. Assuming they hatch tomorrow, this was a 14 days from the last egg laid to hatching (13 days run)! 14 May 1030. Still 4 eggs!! It's not looking good for these guys; there would appear to be a serious problem with these eggs. 16 May 900. 3 eggs; I removed them and cracked them open - none had developed normally. Oh well. Hope they try again.
