Sunrise - begin obs. 3/4 to stratos taltocu. Wind light easterly. Sea calm. Following Now 2 following 0739 Red Phalange 1 lee seen; calling. 0758 Whale Reported by bridge - dead ahead - did not show again. 0759 Red Phalange 2 N 0802 Delphinus (154) lee Paralleled ship but didn't ride bow wave - Not tightly Grouped - side pattern of Delphinus - dorsal fins were mostly dingy white, with dark leading edge. 0803 Whale ? (1) Pseudorca - Rel 3 (False Killer whale) Saw Brek surface once right where Delphinus had been. Prominent dorsal fin, shape of Delphinus fin in middle of back - much larger than Delphinus. Behind it were series of 20' long, narrow "slick" areas - possibly where it had previously approached or broken surface. 0815 Red Phalange 1 lee Seen; calling 0820 Made 1800 turn - start target retrieval exercise. 0825 B Calb. (3) Now following 0837 Cowbird - ? 2 Not seen to settle on ship 0849 Storm Pet. 1 lee 0900 Par. Jaeger 1 SE 1st phase - no elongated tail feathers visible. 0925 M. Dove (1) 0954 M. Dove 6 lee 0959 Vesper Sparrow 1 Alighted momentarily on helo deck fence. White outer tail feathers, chestnut shoulder patch, head x bill pattern all seen clearly. Several more close views - to 1057. No sightings after 1015. 1035 M. Dove 1102 Porpoise Dolphin (1) (Roh Pula - ocean sunfish) Probably 2 playing very quietly beneath surface - about 50 yards from boat. Dorsal fin exposed much of time (Occasionally 2 fins), but hardly rippled surface of smooth water. Dorsal fin mostly white with narrow dark edges. Observed for 3-4 minutes. 1110 Warbling Vireo 1 1113 - M. Dove Caught insect on helo deck - perched on guard fence to eat it. No wingbars - broad eyeline - dark car - yellowish wash upper breast. I still about ship - seen repeatedly since 1035. 1110 Abunda target - Underway toward north. Zero miles traversed since 0820 SI-MNH-958-e Rev. 5-66
