Sunrise = 0452 0452 following ship 0708 New Zea. Shean. 1 √ s-sw — following field characters noted: white breast, black, upper rings + head (upper) predominantly gray. Distinctive "W" pattern across wings. Flight shearwater like, slightly slower wingbeats than sooty, alternate flapping + short glides - viewed for ca. 1 min. 0719 BFA 1 √ w — "ring" of white around tail, not too extensive 0729 New Zea Shean? 1 √ sw — noted: white breast, gray upper, rapid shearwater slope interspersed with short glides close to water. no high arcs. BFA 2 √ w — following ship; 1 my dark rump, just a bit of light on wing, other w/ ring. 0740 BFA 3 √ w — 3rd just join ship 0746 BFA 4 √ w — 4th "" "" 22 have white rump; these birds may be dividing their attention between us + the accompanying ship, 'this 2 didn't see any following it. 0800 BFA 2 √ w — 0815 BFA -0- — ≥3 following other ship. Passerine sp. 1 √ w — small, mostly brown, passerine fluttered behind ship briefly. 0822 St. pet.? 1 √ E — far to starboard; appeared small even though glassed BFA 1+3 √ w — 1 following us + 3 following sister ship. 0830 Gorga sp.? 1 √ w — followed ship for ca. 3 min + then settles to water.
