1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Plague Hastings Reservation 27 April 1940. 3361 atop Plague 1 May Steve Dobson gave me the wing of 322 complete with the Orange wing streamer still intact which he'd found below the 20 tree here. The bird had clearly been dead some time. Thus I am at least able to change the fate of this bird to "Died about" from "Disappeared". 3 May Found a roost hole (at least) in the Blue Oak by the labs (the '75-'76 nest tree) this evening. 5 May 1600. Counted stores: Plague: 60 ? 68 Other: 8 ? Nobody seen in any holes anywhere. 7 May 1415. 3361 and 9157 both in Plague trying to chase out crows. 10 May 9157 seen on the telephone pole. 19 May 9 (at least) roosting in the telephone pole. 20 May 1700. After seeing a bird twice in one of the holes in the 20 tree which I opened last year, I went up and checked it, finding 5 eggs! 1 June 1700. Bird flushed from hole in confirming 5 eggs. 5 June Pam saw the birds attending the nest this afternoon. 6 June 9157 seen atop Plague tree this evening. 9 June 630. Bird in hole. 12 June 930. With some calling heard here, I came over to check the nest; not only was no bird in it but there were feathers strewn at the hole and along the limb up from it. Going up, I found abundant evidence of a 6 bird having been eaten here: mandibles, vertebrae, a rectrix, and numerous body feathers. Unfortunately, no identifying feature (p.5)
