1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation 29 June 1210. Definite queaky noises coming from nest - should be done soon if I'm foolish enough to do it at all. 2 July 700. Once again, against my saner judgement; I went up and got the babies, of whom there were 3: ① 468 ② 469 ③ 80.4 (84) 81.5 (82) 81.9 (72) The first 2 were banded and returned. The 3rd (the youngest) was (blush, blush) absconded with and taken home to Red House, where I intend to raise him/her. 13 October 1500. Somehow, somewhere these birds are getting acorns, and they to have quite a few stores (perhaps ~1000). The tree is far from nearing full, however. 29 November 1600. No birds seen here, but they are still in relatively good shape as far as stores go, with possibly 2000 or so.
