1978 Walter D. Koenig 25 Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co, California 16 December Walked up Palo Escrito today with Pam and Ted Kaehler. Most of the granaries we passed were empty and there was virtually no sign of current AW activity until we got in the vicinity of the windmill (approximate elevation 3600'+) at which point granaries were thick and all seemed fairly well stocked with acorns. This remained the case all the way up to the top. This area was full of nice mature Valley Oaks, there are still no pines at all anywhere on the ridge. Other oaks were agrifolia, douglessii, and chrysolepis; there appeared to be no kelloggii. Thus the acorn crop appears to have been good at the higher elevations, but once again it was clear that below 3500' or so the crop was very nearly a complete washout.
