Melanerpes formicivorus
Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif.
23 June Returned late this morning to the Blonquist Ranch at
Corral Viejo Canyon (near the Windmill [on USGS map]) and
opened the 2 nests I found on 18 June. The first had 3
babies about 17-18 days old who were marked as measured as:
(1) 73.2 gm [43mm] Or-Brn
(2) 67.3 [44] Blk-Wht
(3) 64.4 [38] LP-Wht(n)
This was the first nest between the Windmill and the main road
on the map on p. 21.
The second nest had 5 young babies (3-4 days old), broken
eggshells but no sign of any unhatched egg(s):
(1) 16.2 (10.5) LB-Yel (#470)
(2) 10.9 (10) Wn-Blk (#471)
(3) 11.6 (10.5) DB-DP (#472)
(4) 3.9 NB
(5) 3.2 NB
This was in Nest tree 2 as indicated on the back of p. 21.
As noted on 18 June, both these groups have lots of stores
remaining.
30 June 1100. Walked by Blomone (where I flushed ≥3 birds, inc. at
least 1 of the banded babies) and Gazebo (where I found no
birds, no sign of a nest, and there are indeed no stores) on my
way to the first Corral Viejo Cyn nest (see 23 June). Opening it
up, I found no sign of anything inside(!). On the limb (horizontal)
directly behind it, however, I found at least 20 or more reniges
emerging from their sheaths which had been plucked or otherwise
taken from baby woodpeckers too young to fledge. I found no
