1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3 (8 December) and ☸♀ LB/LP#207. 1030. ♀290 (now in her 3rd yr) still makes little begging noises (squeals, etc.) in the presence of ♀207. She really acts for all the world like a baby. 1040. 4 birds now in granary, inc. ☺♂ Red-LP/M #120. 1045. ! ☺♂ DB/M #123! Holy cow! I had given up on this bird last March!. Birds sitting in '77 nest tree now. 1050. ♂123 flew off towards UA2. 1130. ☺♂ M/LB #204 here now eating an acorn. ♀289, 290 here also. And ♀207. 1135. Leaving. Looks as though neither ♂122 nor ♀128 are here any more. However, ♂123 is at least revived. 26 December Purge: ♂122. Last seen 18 May, gone by 4 July (this bird had been crippled for some time) → Dis. abt. 10 June ± 2 wks. ♀128. This girl was last seen on 6 July and was gone by 15 October → Dis. Abt. 25 August ± 1 month (at UA2) This bird apparently gave up after being unable to pull off a clutch here during either of the past 2 years. Revive: ♂123. Previously scrapped (6 August) after not having been seen since 22 Feb. Seen here on 8 December. 29 December 145. ♀DB-w/n/LB#290 here when I came to count stores: N fuki: 626 M fuki: 563 S fuki: 709 Total: 1898. Very good, considering!
