1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fornicivorus Arnold 3 Hastings Reseration (4 July) soft squeaks and other begging noises entirely characteristic of babies. (This lasting for several minutes on end, no loss). 1125. Leaving. Seems like ① No nest ② No unbandd birds (!) ③ 83121 and 123 probably have left since Feb. to try their luck elsewhere, and ④ 8126 has apparently returned again, for the 3rd (?) time after an unsuccessful attempt (his 2nd) to make a go at LA2. 6 July See UA2 notes for several AS birds seen there. 16 July 1515. Flushed 1 bird from the granary, where stores do remain. 27 July 1900. Several birds roosting early in the nest hole here. 6 August Purge: 83121 and 123; last seen here on 22 Feb. after returning home from the failure at LA2; gone [probably moved] by 18 May → Dis. about 31 March 1978 ± 1 month. 8 August 930. Acorns are finally on the shorts here: N Fork 24 M Fork 0 } 31. S Fork 9 2 September 730. No promising acorns left here: ②. Everybody on the Arnold is now out of stores. 15 October Ron watched here this morning and saw 4 birds: ① 8120, ② 8207, ③ 8289, ④ 8290 (plus a 2nd unidentified ⑦). This group does have stores, at least. 22 October 125.
