1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3 Hastings Reservation (1 June) 1200. Noone in any other holes. 5 June 930. Noone in any holes here, including the nest, which I'm sure has failed. 10 June 1000. Noone in any holes here. 1100. Went up to the next hole (where there were no birds) and found the same old 2 eggs! Clearly, however, this nest has failed (=been abandoned) as it is now the 12th day since I found them. 20 June 1625. Noone seen here in or out of holes. Plenty of stores still remain, however. 24 June 940. Watching. 1010. ①♀ Mauve/1R Red #207; ②♂ [illegible]/M #120; ♂ ?? , plus 2nd ♀ in granary eating acorns. ③♀ Yel/DB #128 . 1014. 4♀♀ here at the moment. ④♀ DB-WN(W)/ #290. ⑤♀ M/or #289, 1040. Leaving. All mostly quiet, and definitely no sign of a nest. 1050. See UA2 notes-possibly something going on after all. Counted stores: N Fork: 483 M Fork: 92 S Fork: 488 4 July 925.
