1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3. (18 May) $743.(①♀DB-conc)/DB#290. 753.(③♀Mauve/LP-Red#207 in granary. 757.(⑥♂LB/P-w-R#204. 805. Pretty sure I had ⑧Red #121 across the gulch here ③♀ M/Red#289. ⑧120 just visited the '75-76 nest hole briefly. 855. Peering down below is ③③ No left leg #122. 915. Nothing new. Time to move over to UA2 for a bit. No real clue as to a nest as yet. 923. Checking back here I have ④⑧ub looking me over. These unbanded birds are a definite problem. It looks as though one of each may still be here, despite my prayers to the contrary. 935. There are 21 May 1000. Several birds on the A3 side of the Top Field, no doubt of this group. None in any holes, however. 22 May 1810. Flushed 4 birds roosting already in the '77 nest hole (with a 5th still looking out at me!). 25 May None in any holes around here. Nonetheless, I better be careful - something ought to happen soon! 26 May 1050. None in any holes. 29 May 855. ⑧ in '75-76 nest hole. Could be it finally. 1130. Opened hole: 2 eggs, clear, but dirty (but then again the hole was dirty to begin with.) At least this is it. 30 May 1900. Checked the hole, which still has but 2 eggs (bird flushed). 1 June 1145. There was noone in the hole this time when I went up; both eggs were still there, but they were cold - I would not be surprised if this nest had been abandoned. No birds were seen in the vicinity.
