1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3 Hastings Reservation 18 February See LA2 notes for several A3 birds (♀128,♂204, ♂207) seen in that area this afternoon. 22 February 11:10. Watching. 1307. Despite several birds in the area, the first to show herself waited until now: ①♀DB-wN(w)/DB#290. ②♂DB/M #123!! Now we're getting someplace! [illegible]. ③♂LB/E-W-R#204. Yes: ④♂ or? Bad leg #122. ⑤♀DB-Yel(w)/M#121. 1338. ⑥♀Yel #128 sapsucking in the swale up towards Lambert's and Keep Out. Along with ⑦♂DB-wN/Bile-#120. 1345. Now ⑧♀ or? DB/Or #289 sapsucking also. With this I'm going to quit and go count acorns. All the "A3" birds have now been seen, and in addition it is clear that the LA2♂s (at least 3 of 4, and no doubt the 4th will turn up) have returned home now that LA2 has run out of supplies. Stores: N fork: 1313 (lost 1 limb w/200 holes) M fork: 708 (lost top w/300 holes) S fork: 1500 Total 3521 Storm losses here (~500 holes) were not major but did take quite a few acorns. 24 February ♂8121,122, and 123 readded here. See LA2 notes. 13 March Counted stores: N fork 1163 M fork 643 S fork: 1107 18 April 155. My first bite up here: a ♂ in the '75-'76 nest hole looking out at me, plus a 2nd bird nearby. Probably it.
