1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Keep Out Hastings Reservation 10 June 920. Went up to the nest, and in opening it found several hatched eggshells along with 2 decomposing babies (about 1-2 days old when they died). 1700. None in hole; 3ca/#118 sitting quietly in sap tree. 24 June 1110. Stub in the trees by the fence on the N side of the granary; meanwhile a ♂ was as usual in the sap tree. 3 July 2000. Nobody roosted in the nest hole tonight (!). 6 July 910. ♀ in the sap tree. Watching. Possibly ♂wn/? 925. ♂ca/lb#118 there sapsucking now. 940. 2nd bird now: Stub. [illegible]. Both in sap tree sapsucking. 950. Well, well: ♂lp/lb#114 here with at least one of the others sapsucking. That bird is a continual problem! 16 July 1500. Watching Stub sitting in sap tree when ♂ca/lb#118 joined here and began to get some sap out of a hole. 1630. The same 2 birds still in the sap tree. No sign of ♂114 so far today. 5 October No sign of any stores or birds here. Could be the end of the life for this group (I actually haven't seen any birds here since at least the end of August). 15 October Still nothing here. 5 November " " 30 November The two birds here presumably abandoned between 16 July and ~30 August → Abnd. about 8 August ±2wks. (♂118 and Stub). This territory is now empty.
