Melanerpes fornicivorus
Keep Out
Hastings Reservation
(28 May) 940. Pub sapsucking. Nest may no longer be being attended.
955. O.K.-bird in hole. Leaving for now.
29 May 1020. Checked hole-still 4 eggs.
30 May 1900. Bird in hole.
1 June 830-1100. watched the nest here, with little success,
except that they're still incubating, an ub ♀, and ≥1 ♂ is involved. The 3(♂) were not identified, but things
were definitely quite slow. I'll have to try again later.
3 June At this point I'm still going to hold back on adding ♂114,
but I will add the unbanded ♀, who is certain (though
there is still the possibility that later evidence will indicate
her to be the same one from Lambert):
♀ub. Not seen here 13 March, here by 21 April (by
this time ♂114 here also) → Moved here [Age unknown]
I April
1978. My evidence is hardly airtight but I
do suspect that there was somewhat of a gap (1-2 months)
between the demise of ♀109 and the appearance of this
♀ here.
5 June 900. None in the nest, and no sounds from it either. Though I
can't get up to it at the moment, my guess is that it's failed.
In fact, looking at the records, today is the 11th since I
first checked the nest and found the full set; thus, they almost
surely would have hatched by now, and have already
met their demise.
940. Watching.
1010. Leaving. 1 bird here briefly in the nest tree, but no
activity around the nest itself.
