1978 Walter D Koening Melanerpes formicivorus Keep Out (4 May) 2nd , nodoubt 118. Humm. 1300. Here he is: 35 La/LB #118. 1310. Well, this clears part of the mystery up. 109 is gone and has been replaced by an ub . 118 is 114 is visiting here and possibly could even move in, for all I know. In any case, he'll have to wait until I do some watching at Lambert to see what's up there. Note: at this point I have no real way of knowing that the ub here is not the same one that lives at Lambert with 114. 11 May Purge: 109. Last seen 31 December 1977. Gone, I think, by about 18 February - Disappeared about 24 Jan ± 2 wks. Who is replacing her is not clear at the moment, but the unbanded now there doesn't seem to have shown up until about 21 April. The present status of this group isn't clear yet, however. 18 May 710. Bird in hole in Live Oak nest tree! These birds may have a nest (in which case I can watch it and find out who's in the group)! 940. Noone in hole now. But an ub flushed from the area over on HNHR side who probably belongs here. 21 May 930. Bird in the hole again. This hole better be checked next time I'm up. Lots of activity in Top field . 1025. Watching from truck such that I can see the hole and sap tree. Noone in the hole. 1045. There're at least 3-4 birds here, 35 La/LB #118. 2 ub. But definitely others-
