1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus BigTree Hastings Reservation (3 May) 1523. Now ?ub, ?104, and ?403 here together. 1555. At this point I'm still not sure, but I am at least willing to entertain the possibility that ?108 is no longer with us, and that the group here consists of ?104, ?ub, and the 2 first-year birds. Leaving. 1650. Nobody in any holes. This group is also Out of Stores. 4 May 1215. ?403 in perch tree. 18 May 950. Nobody seen here in/out of holes. 21 May 940. 8 or 8m/0-B#104 seen in the top area near Keep Out. Also ?0r/m #403 and ?ub. 1020. Now up in the top area is ? Ble-won(c)/M /B1ke! (either ?395 from Gade or, more likely, ?384 from R3!) He's probing around in the top field here. 1145. Nobody in any holes. 25 May 1245. Flushed a bird out of a hole I'd previously not been aware of. Peering in carefully with my mirror, the hole looked ready but at the moment empty. 28 May 1120. Nobody seen here in walking around. 29 May 1020. Nobody in any holes here. 5 June 850. " " " " 10 June 850. " " " " 1840. Bird(s) [roosting] in hole found on 25 May. Not a nest, I suspect, but could be a good place to ambush eventually. 20 June 1720. 2 birds flushed from hole found on 25 May. 24 June 1120. ?0r/m #403 up in perch tree, possibly flushed from the hole, where I approached, making him rather upset. Possibly something up here after all. I heard nothing from the hole, however.
