1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation 4 February 1040. Watching. 1115. There was just a silent, brief chase here with one bird landing briefly, 8? ??. Apparently an intruder himself. 1140. Some birds finally show up: ①♂ wh-dk/la #256. ②♂ Mv/Mv #86. Both eating acorns or looking at stores. 1220. Both 86 and 256 here several times working stores. ③♀ or/light #191. 1235. ④♀ wh-R/w-R #419. 1255. Finally got him: ⑤♂ yel/pink #402. Several birds here again eating acorns or working stores. 1300. Leaving to count stores. Stores: tree 2: 1292 tree 1: 303 1595 This group has recently lost several small limbs containing a total of about 300 holes. 20 February 12 April Took a sample of 60 acorns, mostly from one of the fallen limbs. 1400. No birds seen (8402 is down at Pump today, by the way). Counted stores: tree 1: 530 tree 2: 104 634 14 April Two birds roosted in the unopened hole on the lower side of the field this evening. None apparently roosted in the next hole. Others may have roosted on the upper end of the field somewhere or other. 19 April 8402 still at Pump. 1500. Nobody seen in any holes up here. 23 April ♀191 identified as the new ♀ living down at MacRoberts. See MacRoberts notes.
