1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 Hastings Reservation 4 February Collected a sample of 50 acorns out of the Valley Oak. 1400. Watching. It looks like this group lost a major limb from its sycamore granary recently also (maybe not-) Not the first time. 1435. Leaving- too many damn cars out here on a nice sunday afternoon. Counted stores: Valley Oak: 409 ) Sycamore: 202 ) G!! They have indeed lost a limb from the sycamore along with about 400-500 holes and probably lots of acorns-accounting in part for the large decline in stores there. 21 February 1515. Watching. 1600. The sun has just gone behind the hill, and still nobody has returned. Maybe tomorrow! 23 February 835. Watching. 842. ①♂ wn-Bike #184. ②♂ or/LB #68. ③♀ DB/wn-LB #265. 855. ! Over on perch tree across river we have ③68 feeding a beggining. ④♂ Bike-wn/cn/M #384! Oops! 915. ②♂ Red-Bile/Red #382 eating an acorn in the Valley Oak. Meanwhile, ①184, ②265 over across river on perch tree with ③384 and ④♀ wn-DB/LB #383 begging from the ♀. 925. 3rd♀: ?♂?, probably 269. 930. ③68 on perch tree across the river with a small lizard (Sceloporus, no doubt) in his bill - about ④ 3x length of his head! Wow! No squirming-probably dead already. Looked around several times, then flew off. 950. Leaving. Not essentially everyone.
