Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 3
Hastings Reservation
4 February
Collected a sample of 50 acorns out of the Valley Oak.
1400. Watching. It looks like this group lost a major limb from
its sycamore granary recently also (maybe not-)
Not the first time.
1435. Leaving- too many damn cars out here on a nice sunday
afternoon.
Counted stores: Valley Oak: 409 )
Sycamore: 202 ) G!!
They have indeed lost a limb from the sycamore along with
about 400-500 holes and probably lots of acorns-accounting
in part for the large decline in stores there.
