Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Finch Hastings Reservation (13 June) There are still stores left, however; the time may be soon. 14 June 1735. 1 bird flushed from hole in sycamore granary right above the road. Otherwise all pretty quiet. 15 June 1030. Counted stores: 15Ω, all in the Valley Oak. Things were quiet and no birds were in any holes 19 June 1700. Nobody in any holes here yet. 22 June 1305. Watching. ♀ atop sycamore. 1313. (♂) RB/LB-WN #66 in VO granary, ♀ is (♀) LA/DB-WN #343. Now preening atop sycamore. This bird looks like she's here for good. 1335. Going for a brief walk around. 29 June 1000. None in any holes here. 1 July 1130. " " " " 3 July 1615. Watching. 1638. (♂) T-Red/T-Red #282 in VO granary; also (♂) RB/LB-WN #66. 1715. Leaving. Pretty slow—not even a glimpse of the ♀(♀). None in any holes either. 24 July 1530. Watching. 1605. (♂) RB/LB-WN #66, (♂) WN/DB #278 in nest tree + nearby perch sycamore. 1620. 4 birds on nest tree, apparently all ♀♀. 1630. Leaving—still nothing on the ♀(♀). Counted stores: Ω, or very nearly 50. I bet they've run out quite recently (since 3 July, most likely). 10 September 1210. Watching. Several birds here, apparently storing. (♂) RB/LB-WN #66. 1230. #66 now working on a hole in the nest sycamore. 1237. (♂) WN/DB #278 across the road. 1240. After an initial flush of activity, birds are pretty scarce
