1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 (1 May) sapsucking here also as well as eating acorns. 1430. Leaving: Still missing some! 3 May 1330. Several birds in the lower valley area inc. ♀ #295. 3 other ♀♀ seen at Finch - see Finch notes. 8 May 1100. Walked all around here, seeing none until I got to Valhalla, where there were 3 birds at least, one of whom flushed to the hole (nobody was ever seen inside it, however). It's possible that this area may prove to be important yet - there are really very few other holes that I know of where I'd guess these birds might breed. Counted stores: ♀ (!) This group has joined the "for all practical purposes no stores" category. Clearly the loss of their 2nd granary and nest tree hit these birds hard last winter. Perhaps this also helps to explain the odd eagerness of the ♀♀ here to go over to Finch? 1840. Still birds and activity up around Valhalla, including some chasing. Nobody seems to be anywhere else, in fact. 1545. Bird in lowest hole in squaremore by the creek. May be hope here yet. 17 May 1545. None in any holes (Valhalla checked, too). 3 birds flushed from the main granary. 19 May ♀293 seen at Finch. See Finch notes. Also ♀354. 27 May 1515. No sign of anyone here in passing. 4 June 820. ♀354 and ♀293 at Finch. 850. No sign of any significant activity here after a 20 minute walk through the area and up by Valhalla. 7 June 640. Walked around here, finding none in any holes. Up
