1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Westgate Hastings Reservation (2 December) here in Westgate who has remained in or near here the entire time. He refuses to give me the look I want, but he is definitely 3M/. There is either no band or a Lavernish band on the upper left, and the same for both Right bands. I can detect no striking contrast in the 2 right bands. My conclusion, therefore, is that 858 lives, and this is he (this bird is clearly not j463 or 8465). Hopefully I'll get a better look, but the problem is in fact not that my looks have been bad but that his bands are apparently quite cryptic (e.g. old and dull colored). Lavern fits. Also, there was a gap in the metal band suggesting an old (small) band such as Michael used to give these birds. 1205. Finally got him for sure: (?3 la /la #58! Good! A rebirth among this fall of carnage! Leaving for now. 3 December Revive: 858. Previously not seen since 3 Dec. 1977, 1 year ago exactly! Purge: 9433, 8396, 9397. All last seen 5 July; gone by 26 October → Dis. abt 31 August ±1 month. j463, j464. Last seen 6 August, gone by 26 October → Dis. abt. 16 Sept. ±1 month.
