1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blomone Hastings Reservation 11 September Looking over my notes for this group I discovered that ♂301, who I saw here on 26 April and again on 17 May, is not the bird I thought knew to have moved here (e.g. ♂300) and had seen here last fall. In fact, ♂301 (♂300's sib from Hay-Blom) disappeared from Hay-Blom at the same time as ♂246 and ♂300 but was not seen again and had been presumed gone. Now, however, it appears that he left with the other two birds (both ♂300 and 301 were in their first year, mind you) and all most likely moved to Blomone. At this point it would be useful to watch and see which are still there. 3 November Watched here at dusk tonight, seeing 2 birds (only?) roost in the spring nest hole. There are acorns stored here, at least. 30 November Set up an ambush this evening and had 4 birds roost here. 27 December After a few more false starts I finally ambushed successfully, nabbing 3 birds (a 4th may have roosted elsewhere): ♂301, ♀ub, and ♀ub (now 479 and 478). Acorns are still present here, and I should plan on including this group next spring.
