1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blomone Blouquist Ranch 22 April Discovered newly-hatched babies here late this evening (about 1830). See general M.formicivorus notes. 26 April 1200. Walked by, hearing noises out of the nest still. Also flushed a ♀ and ♂ yello LP/DB-Red #301 from the area. A few more days and the nest should probably be opened. 1 May 1745. Came by and sawed open the nest (with no small effort, I might add) finding 3 babies: Colorband Weight Winglength (plus feathers) Note #436 1) Brown-Or 44.3 25 Eyes barely open #437 2) Black-DP 40.0 21 Eyes closed #438 3) None 24.8 16 "" They were returned and I was gone by 1845. 5 May 1100. Sounds still coming from the nest here. 14 May 1500. Opened the nest and banded the babies, all 3 of whom have made it and will surely fledge. They are now #436, 437, and 438. Examining the granary here, I could not see any Gone side good stored acorns remaining - they are apparently going to manage to fledge young without them. Star capture record Weights and wing lengths: 436 :① 85.3 gm 89 mm 437 :② 76.5 gm 78 mm 438 :③ 59.7 gm 50mm 17 May 1130. No sounds from hole (probably too old for that now) but ♀ my red #301 seen nearby. [! Ah... see 11 Sept.78 notes]. 18 May Baby seen peering out at me this afternoon.
