Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack
Hastings Reservation
(30 May) (the birds had been feeding young) but the babies were
very young and were not banded. There were only 3,
and I could find no trace of an unhatched egg (the
rest was otherwise littered with eggshells) so I suspect
that all hatched but one faded already.
3 June Watched today from 945-1230. Things were very slow, but
everyone did show up and the nest is still on. See back for a
compilation.
6 June Made another watch today from 745-1125 (220 minutes).
See back for compilation. Things were still slow, but
not quite as bad as last time.
9 June 2000. Watched carefully at dusk tonight: About
945 the 8th originally (~1930) in the hole was replaced
by 8307; about 1 minute later he was replaced by
8309, and then, finally, about 1952 he was
again replaced by 8307, who remained in the
hole undisturbed to 2000, by which time it was
quite dark and I left.
13 June Watched here this evening from 1605-1835. See back for a
compilation. 8309 has lost his wing-streamer.
19 June Watched the nest from 1330-1500, but got no feedings; only 2
visits to the lip of the hole by 8307 before departing w/o
having tipped into the hole or fed. Going up to it, I was
unable to confirm anybody being in it. Thus, it may have
failed. In any case, this certainly doesn't appear to be the
afternoon to watch it.
Counted stores: 1387 (all in Main tree).
