Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack
Hastings Reservation
19 March
Counted stores: Main tree: 3267
20 tree: 81
It is a beautiful sunny day and the birds are not far away
being somewhat more vocal and conspicuous here than usual.
13 April
1335. Nobody seen here in holes or out. Several brand
new holes in the rotten trunk of the 20 tree that may be
usable for roosting, at least.
16 April
1800. Flushed 2 birds from the storage area but saw nobody
in any holes anywhere.
21 April
1750. None found looking out of any holes anywhere.
26 April
820. Watching.
830. 3-4+ birds appeared; possibly an intruder. ♀? Rub here in
UH tree - but looks rather wary - left leg normal - I bet she's
not the same one as was here before.
835. ♀ red-w/da-ca ? in Main tree. Who's this??
840. 1 or more of the birds sapsucking in the area towards the
'75 nest tree.
848. Now in UH tree: ⚫♂DBRW #309 plus a ♀.
858. ⚫♀ 30rW#307. The above banded ♀ must have been
①♀ r-w-b/w #170. The birds are also quite busy here eating
oak buds off the Blue Oaks.
930. Looks like someone just flew over to the '75 nest hole or
thereabouts.
950. There is a ♂ here with no WS, but I haven't been able to get him
yet. A bird just flew to the '75 nest hole again.
1003.④♂ 42e- #390. ♀ r-w-b/m #170 finally seen well.
1120. Leaving, after another frustrating 1½ hours.
