Melanerpes famicivorus
1800 Hastings Reservation
25 April 1730. Nobody in any of the holes here.
27 April 1710. " " " " " "
1845. Watched here at dusk, but learned nothing - never even
saw anyone go to roost even though there was a bird in
the tree.
1 May 1115. 2 ?? together in Main tree; flushed to a tree up the
vale toward H-B where I saw (all?) 4 birds sitting.
Now watching in hopes of quick confirmation.
1210. Finally: ?♂️?♀️ #193 and ?♂️?♀️ #ub.
1230. Once again I am failed of seeing everybody, but it is now
clear that the 4 are here, even though ?260 remains
unaccountably elusive.
6 May 1545. Bird in hole in main tree - could be it.
7 May 1520. Nobody in the hole. Counted stores: 275.
8 May 955. Nobody in holes here.
1515. Bird in hole.
10 May 1525. Noone in holes in Main tree.
11 May 1140. 2 birds at the hole - should be soon here.
12 May 1115. Hole opened - 7 eggs, all barely able to fit onto the
bottom. Wow! Another nest with both ?? laying!
17 May 1035. Bird in hole.
19 May 1645. Nest checked with light-mirror gadget confirming 7 eggs.
20 May 1415-1515. Tried to watch the nest, but ? I'm going to need a hide.
I did see ?♂️?♀️/P/?♀️ #193. Birds were attending the nest.
27 May 1500. A lone-fide failure: no trace of eggs or babies in nest.
Group definitely does still have stores, however. Rats.
3 June 1245. ?ub and 2nd? atop granary. Noone in any holes here. [go to p.4]
