1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation 3 February 1455. Several birds flushing from the 1500 side of the swale here are indeed 1500 birds: ♂296 and ♀298. 1500. Watching. 1520. ♂♀ am/m #260 in main tree. Here after all! 2nd♀ here also bust failing to show her legs. 1545. ♂♀ red/ #193 above the main tree. Leaving. I got the most important birds, and I'm not all that worried about the ♂♂ (esp. the unbanded one!). Stores: 630 (all in main tree) 19 March 1100. Counted stores: 469. Not only is this group hanging in there store-wise, but there are 2 new roost/ rest(?) holes in the main tree, neither of which I remember seeing before. In the old "nest" tree, there are quite a few acorn shells which might have had acorns in them, but there are still not stores there and possibly these birds have not even "reclaimed" it as yet. 16 April 1830. ≥1 bird in a hole in the Main tree. Meanwhile, further evidence that the area by the old nest tree still belongs to 1500 now - see 1500 notes. 17 April 1340. Nobody in holes here (in Main tree) 19 April 1330. Watching. None in holes. 1413. Finally got 2: ♂♀ DB-LP/ #193 and ♂♂ LP-DB/LP #347. 1430. ♂193 back again. A ♂ here also. But all pretty quiet. 1445. Leaving. Pretty quiet. 22 April 1450. Watching. 1510. 3 birds here briefly: ♂♀ DP2-4gkt/DB #193, 2 others. 1605. Well, they're here, but being none too lively about it. Leaving.
