1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 9 1500 Hastings Reservation 14 July C40. Watching from hide. 705. [illegible] #298. 708. Intruder Griefly in tree 2 - nervous but not vocally chased by 8298: j M/w-da #448 (Hay-Bloom). 710. [illegible] #296 joined 8298 in tree 2. 712. Now in tree 2: [illegible] y-da/or #297 and [illegible] 9ub 727. [illegible] #441. 738. j441 being fed by 8296 now. 750. Another "interesting" baby: j [illegible] #454 (School Hill) Not chased by anyone. 810. In confrontation with 8298, 8297 gave brief submissive [illegible]; i.e. 8298 > 8297. 9ub in tree 1; now j441 here again. 827. j441 above me in tree 3. 840. j441 again in tree 1 begging below 8296. 845. Birds over on sep side sap sucking now. 850. Leaving. I'm not 100% convinced, but I rather feel I should have seen all of the birds. Counted stores: O. This group is functionally out. 4 August 850-905. Nobody at all seen over here - birds possibly over across the creek. 1500. jole-w/Blk #441 in tree 3, flying to sap area. 4 September 1250. Because of numbers (4-5) and the presence of begging birds I think the birds foraging just on the S side of the road across from 1800 are 1500 birds. In any case, I saw one 9 land on a Madrone branch and pick a berry. 1330. [illegible] #88 in tree 3 along with 2 others. 5 September 600. An ambush at the '78 nest hole on this rainy morning
