1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation 12 May 1500. 820. Watching nest. I'm worried about it, though, as both 888 and 8297 were just seen down at the Pump and there was noone in the nest when I arrived. 827. 8348 hawking from tree 3. 8YRW#296 there also. Also an unringed streamered 8! 850. Definitely does not look good here. Leaving and will return to open it up and check for sure. 1000. Opened the nest and found the same 3 eggs warm and apparently in good condition. Guess I've just been scaring them off! 1825. Bird in hole. 17 May 1030. Listening carefully I could hear the whistles of very young babies. They've hatched. 1600. Opened nest: 2 babies only; weighed, wing lengths taken, marked, and returned. No other egg in nest - the 3rd probably hatched and starved already. 1930. At dusk tonight, 1 bird, without a wingstreamer, gone in, followed several minutes later by 888 (RRR). I did not see anyone leave the hole, so it is entirely possible that both stayed in. Unfortunately, I can't be sure of who the 2nd bird was. 19 May 1030. Came by and counted stores: Tree 1: 192 > 229. Tree 2: 37 Some of these obviously came from the Pump. Also, I started worrying about the nest, but after a time a 8 finally stuck his head out, so it's probably ok. 20 May 740-1100. Watched the nest here; see back.
