1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomivivorus Pump Hastings Reservation (12 April) 25 March even when acorns were added. : Abandoned about 22 March 1978. 13 April 1300. 1 bird flushed when I arrived and there are still some acorns left, but everything is rather quiet. 1305. 8402 here eating an acorn. Pub also. Now 888 here (joining them). Some greeting wakas. 8297 here. Things would appear to be pretty much the same as yesterday. Pub and 8402 still both here regularly; 1500 birds commuting. 1315. The seems to be making rather a lot of noise (lots of hamit-ing). 8402 continues to be subordinate to the whims of the 1500 88. Leaving. 14 April 1830. There is a sitting in the granary, but otherwise it's deaf quiet here and about all the acorns appear to be cleared out of the storage area. 16 April No sign of life here this evening. 19 April 1320. On the far side of the knoll just above the pond here is 8/yel-da#402 still, eating some oak buts. 21 April 1700. No sign of anyone down here. 27 April 1700. " " " " 12 May 810. Several birds here: 8RREW#88 and 8or/yel-da#297 (1500) along with 8M/DB-LB#432. Possibly here for water - they're not at the granary. Right now they're in the Valley Oaks by the pond. Well - with 8432 here the picture changes! 13 May 1500-1700. As another attempt to lure birds here, I placed 500 good acorns in the granary as well as Road's 1977 nest hole.
