1978 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Pump 31 March 1445. Nobody seen here in passing. 8 April No sign of anybody here. 12 9 April Purge: ♀ 429. Last seen December 1977. This bird was not seen again after the granary fell on or about 18 December, in particular when I watched on 26 December and saw the other 2: Disappeared about 19 December 1977 ± 1 week. 11 April 1800. Set up 325 acorns in the tree before dusk. Tried to get them in tightly! 12 April 715. There are at least 2 or 3 birds here already, but it's still pretty quiet. (1) RRR #88 from 1500 is one. (2) ♂ or/yel-DG #297 (1500). (3) ♀ Lblue/LP#296 (1500). (4) ♂ yel/red #402 (School Hill), 720. No big chasing, but more birds than I thought here. 725. Somebody (8402?) is being chased by the 1500 birds. Some great greeting wakas and a few barrits so far, but no Garricks at all. 730. 8402 is pecked at like a subordinate by the 1500 birds rather than as an intruder (!) Also a noisier 5th bird now here somewhere 733. ♂ Pub (!) here. Birds flying off towards 1500 (and back) but without acorns in their bills—apparently I put them in tightly enough. 736. (6) ♂ LG-DG/M #298 here also. 8402 still here. 1500 birds come and go. 738. A ♂ went to a line willow nearby and drummed lightly, 740. 1500 birds are successfully pilfering a few acorns. 745. Action is slowish but steady. It ought to be a good day! No sign of the old Pump birds so far. Pub still here. Leaving
