1978 Walter D. Koenig
Melanerpes formicivorus
Hastings Reservation
4.
(2 December) of 9434. Searching around, I found only 2 intact primaries (from the left wing) and no further remains. Thus, the feathers found in the barn at 9 on 29 Oct. were not this bird, as all the relevant 1° of that individual were already accounted for. Thus, the former bird remains a mystery. The fate of 9434 (also [illegible]) can be changed, however, to "Found dead, died about [14 Oct. 1978]"; the fate of 8415 will stand for the time being.
13 December 1400. A bird is sitting here in front of the barn.
15 December 1315. Watching. None here at the moment.
131?. A bird just flew in here! Also, looking carefully, I do see a few (2) stored acorns here.
1321. Is 8ub. Now probing around the sycamores.
1325. Still here. Could actually be a resident of sorts, I suppose. But will require more watching to find out.
24 December 1300. A bird flushed from in front of the barn again—it looks as though someone may really be living here after all.
31 December 1350. 8ub howling and sitting in front of the barn.
