1977 Walter D. Koenig
Melanerpes formicivorus
MacRoberts Hastings Reservation
(17 February)
8) During December, ♂323 (plus his 1st-yr. friend)
were still in evidence, though their stores were
essentially zero. ♀511 was not seen and may have
deserted already, but will be assumed to still be
present as long as ♂323 held out.
9) ♂323 and ♀511 abandoned their territory,
presumably due to lack of stores, on about 17 January
1977, ± 1 week.
10) Since then, birds here have been wanderers
(e.g. ♂314) or potential residents (such as the ♂ub
there today). The territory, however, is presently
uninhabited.
7 March No birds, no stores.
18 March ♂323 positively identified at up Robertson Creek; see
general Melanerpes notes. ♂2nd bird there also.
The same individual was almost certainly seen there on
2 February.
2 April 1620. Nobody seems to be up here, as expected.
15 April 940. Several birds here: 1 ub♂ and a ♀ub more or
less together in the [Empty] granary; 1-2 other ♀♀ub
in the vicinity. At least one landed in the granary and
was displaced by the ♀ consorting with the ♂. Both
these birds drummed in the tree, the ♀ several times.
The ♂ hawked numerous times.
1000. Everyone seems to have split entirely. In any
case, several [illegible] birds are obviously interested in
the area, and no doubt a couple with move in soon.
