Melanerpes formicivorus
MacRoberts
Hastings Reservation
(17 February) Conclusions: I surmise the chronology of this
group to be as follows:
1) δ6 (δ510), ζ6 (511), and their single remaining
offspring from 1975 (δ162) remained intact to 31 May 1976.
2) δ510 disappeared about 31 May 1976, leaving
ζ511 and δ167.
3) About the beginning of August, a δ [?] began
considering moving in. ζ511 and δ162 still here.
4) δ162 disappeared [very probably moved] near the
end of August, as previously designated (see 23 November)
5) By 11 September, a minor revolution was
taking place here, vying for slots. ζ511 may
or may not have been here, of course, but it is
not unreasonable to presume that she was. Several
δ♂ were here, as well as strange ζ♀ (one of whom was
caught and banded), who presumably were attracted
to the area but were not directly involved, as ζ511 (given
that ζ511 remained, as I must assume).
6) By 10 October, one adult δ (unbanded) had settled
here along with ζ511. I assume that the 2nd δ6 seen several
times was a 1st year bird from the adult δ's home group
who tagged along, as I have seen frequently happen,
but did not move permanently. This adult δ will be
δ610. Moved to MacRoberts 26 September 1976.
7) These 2 birds, ζ511 and δ610, remained through
November, attempting to store. δ610 was caught and
banded on 16 November to become δ323.
