1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MacRoberts Hastings Reservation (17 February) My next move should be to try and catch this ♂ to see if he's hanging around here regularly. 1230. Set up some netting around the captive, but was unable to catch the ♂, who remained in the tree pretty much continuously until I left at 1400 forgood. In an attempt to draw some conclusions concerning the fate of this group, I here summarize all sightings since May, when I still knew what was going on: May. ♂ub, ♂ub, ♂162 (end of first yr) seen repeatedly. 4 June. ♂ub, ♂162 seen only. ♂ub suspected to be gone. July. ♂ub, ♂162 still only 2 present. 5 August. ♂ub now here, along with ♂ub and ♂162. [Surely not the same bird!] 11 September. Many birds here (288, 299). Some chasing. ♂162 not seen. 15 September. Still several strange birds here. One ♂ub captured and banded (♂318), but never seen again. 28 September. Nobody seemed to be here at all. 10 October. Very few stored acorns; a ♂ub and ♀ub here. Several more watches in October and early November yield a ♂ub and ♀ub regularly; also, a 2nd ♂ub, clearly subordinate to the first, was present occasionally 16 November. ♂ub caught and banded (♂323). ♀ub here. December. ♂323 here regularly; 2nd ♂(ub) occasionally. 17 January. ♂323 here maybe. Stoves gone. 25 January. ♂323 gone; ♂ub seen here. 17 February. ♂ub here alone.
