1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MacRoberts Hastings Reservation 17 January 1045. Watching. One bird in the vicinity. 1120. ♂ finally came and sat in the granary for several minutes. I never got much of a look at his legs, but I think I saw a vague hint of Blue on the left; I suspect he was ♂323. I was able to pick out what looked like 1 intact acorn in the storage tree. 25 January 1645. Watching. Nobody in sight. 1656. ♂ub in tree next to granary sap-sucking. Several barit-cuts brought nobody else to the area. 1659. ♂ now sitting atop granary. 5 February 1030. Watching. 1040. An ♂ub flew into a tree just across the fence from me, sat for a minute, then took off for the base of School Hill. 1115. A [another] ♂ub sat in the tree just north of the granary and preened for 5 minutes. He's still in the vicinity. 1125. A ♀ came by here and was in the trees on either side of the granary sap-sucking for a few minutes; she was ♀M/Red- ♀Rat-Yellow/Red-; no doubt ♀314 once again (!) 1130. Leaving. 17 February 1015. Watching. 1035. Going to get the captive. 1100. Back again; captive up in granary. 1140. There is now an unbounded ♂ checking Juniors out. The bird is in the granary above the cage investigating some empty storage holes. 1200. The ♂ still poking around. Though the group, as it were, is clearly defunct, birds are still obviously interested in the place.
