1977 Walter D. Koenig 2 Melanerpes formicivorus Plague Hastings Reservation 2 April. 945. Walked to the labs to discover lots of activity here, with 6 or so birds flying around in the 2º tree and Plague. I wasn't able to watch until about 1115, however, by which time things had settled down considerably. First 3 birds were together in the 2º tree, these then dispersed. At 1130 both 822 and 9157 were together in Plague. 9157 ate part of an acorn in the 2º tree. 1140. An unringed 9 was chased out of the 2º tree, probably by 9157. 1145. Several more AW are above the labs on the side of the hill - chasing going on now among 4-6 birds. 1147. 3 birds together in 2º tree - 822, 9157, and 8ub. Apparently the effects of the temporary invasion have not been great. 3 April 3 birds definitely seen together at dusk, roosting somewhere in the trees by the labs. 4 April Counted stores: Plague tree: 1111 14 April 630. An ambush at the telephone pole netted all 3 birds, finally, including the ub 8, now #361. All 3 were given wing streamers. 700. Working in the office processing the 3 birds, I heard some wakas outside, where 2-3 birds were in the area displaying and taking acorns from Plague. About 715 I came out with the scope, by which time there were 6-8 birds here, all ub best I could tell, and mostly 99, though I did see 1 8.
