1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Bianca Hastings Reservation 15 January Counted stores and took acorn samples: Woonkoll: 408 (35) Main tree: 208 (65)* The entire primary storage limb from the '76 nest hole up has fallen with a loss of the remaining acorns (600+) and 1500-2000 holes. Remember that they just lost 1000+ holes from another limb here in winter 74-75. Very interesting. "New area": 273 Blue Oaks: 182 Old tree: 188 25 January Saw 8140 when I came over to look at the downed limbs again. I can see no evidence that the acorns are being removed; i.e. that the birds are reclaiming them at all. Also, it looks as though no good roost/nest holes were lost (except for the 1976/7? hole which was split in two). 10 February 1020. Watching. 1040. ①♂ Red/Wth#142 in upper part of territory.
