1977. Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Arnold 2 Hastings Reservation 15 January Florence saw LBRW #215 plus 2 other birds here in wandering around this afternoon. 25 January 1300. Watched for 15 minutes or so but saw none. In the granaries, 315 acorns were counted in the outer Blue Oak; the inside tree has been completely cleaned out. A moderate sized limb had fallen from the Blue Oak from which I took a sample of 47 or so acorns (70 or so had been lost). 26 January 120. Watching. 1232. ♀ came to perch tree karit-cutting.[illegible] 1250. ♂ is ♂/♂/Drk, presumably #213. I'm going. 10 February 945. Watching. 2 birds here briefly a few minutes ago. 1007. Simultaneously they all showed up in the storage tree: ♂ Red DB/M #133, ♀ LP/DB-WH(n)#213, and ♀ LBRW#215. 1010. Leaving. 10 March 1145. 3 birds flushed from the outer Blue Oak, where I counted 171 acorns remaining. 13 April 1445. Counted stores: 188. Apparently they haven't been used much in the last month. 18 April 1130. I counted ♂ in perch tree; none in any holes. 24 April 1500. Nobody seen. 26 April 1045. Watching. 1100. (1)♀ Or / Blue-WH(n) #213; 1-2 others (behind her in the forest. 1120. (2)♀ LBRW#215 and (3)♂ (?) [presumably #133]. Birds are mostly back by the '75 nest tree or beyond, where I'm going to check the hole. 28 April 1600. A noisy ♂ bird (probably the wing-streamered ♀) flushed out of the '76 nest hole.
