Melanerpes formicivorus
Upper Arnold 2
(26 April) (3) 3? Blue/ presumably #123.
1000. 3 birds back in granary, then flew down just across
South Ravine. Maybe a 4th bird here also.
1005. (3) 3Blue/M #123.
1015. Someone is still upsetting these birds, but I'm
unable to get a fix on an intruder. But at least 2 more
A3 birds arrived, inc. (4) 8? wh/Dr-w/wh #126 and →(5) 8? Or Badly #122!
the latter had a small reddish ant crawling around in his
neck, and was using his tail to help him maintain his
balance.
These other A3 birds were not being chased best I could tell
1030. Leaving. Things are quite interesting here; it will be
read to see who (which of the 8?) stay for good.
28 April
1540. 22 birds flushed from here, inc. 3rd Blue Light #123.
29 April
1505. 3 in lowest hole in the Valley Oak; no other birds in
evidence.
30 April
1425. No birds in hole; 1-2 probably flushed from the area, though
3 May
1440. At least 3 birds flushed from the tree with the
holes, but nobody was inside.
4 May
1930. None seen here in a brief pass.
5 May
1800. 18? in hole and another (banded) in the small granary
up the hill from the hole tree; it might be worth checking
this hole again after all.
6 May
1510. Bird in hole. It's about time to go up and look again.
10 May
1620. Nobody here at all, for once.
13 May
1125. 3 flushed up at the upper end of the area, but nobody
else seen and none in the hole.
