1977. Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnott 3 (14 November) 1152(?)♀Maure/1PRed#207. 1215.⑤♂R-W/DB-BLd#120 ♀889, by the way, looks more like ♀LP-DB/or than or-DB/or. 1230. There were 2♂ together for a minute for sure (I possibly unbanded). ♂(120 were again, no doubt one of them (the other begged submissively while next to him). 1240. Well. 2nd male is ♂Red/DB-WH(m) #121. Maybe he hasn't quite decided what to do yet — He is spending sometime working stores. 1245. Leaving. Still some doubt about ♂204 (seen at LA2 but not here) and ♂121 (seen both at LA2 and here), but otherwise the ♂ group looks pretty good with 1♂ and an amazing 4♀ — all banded! (♂205 and, very impressively, the ub♂ and ♀, all seem fairly conclusively to be gone). 26 November Purge: ①♂ unbanded. Last seen 31 May. Gone (best I can tell) by 8 October → Disappeared about 5 August ± 2 months. ②♀ unbanded. Last seen 19 April. Gone by 13 June → Disappeared about 16 May ± 1 month. ③♂205. Last seen 13 June, Gone by 8 October → Disappeared about [illegible] August ± 2 months, 31 July ± 1 month. Very possibly this bird left soon after the nest failure, conceivably with ♂ub. 18 December Counted stores: N fork: 2286 ) 5623 M fork: 1578 } S fork: 1759 ) The general scarcity of stored acorns up here is certainly not reflected in the stores here!
