1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 3 Hastings Reservation (5 May) N fork: 789 M fork: 626 S fork: 816 6 May 1515. Nobody in holes. 10 May 1615. Nobody here in holes or otherwise. 1720. 3 birds flushed from main storage area this time. 13 May 1115. A bird flushed from the '75-'76 nest tree, presumably from a hole, but not the old nest hole. No nestlings heard from below. 1310. Nobody here this time. A down feather stuck at the edge of the old nest hole indicates some kind of usage there, at least. 1800. Several birds in the main granary flushed in what appeared to be a direct beeline toward UA2. No one was there either, though, except for a bird in their hole (see UA2 notes). 19 May 1615. Nothing. 21 May 1520-1535. Sat and watched behind the tree on the knoll. At one point 5 birds were. [illegible] in the granary, inc. 383? As it happens, I only identified 1 bird: [illegible] ♀ mauve/wh-red #207, the 2nd-yr ♀ I missed in April. -1540. Now more: [illegible] ♂ blue / -#204, who took an acorn and flew over, toward UA2 with it. 1600. Don't understand entirely what's up, but they certainly do not seem to be interested in any holes here, or even anything across the canyons. They are flying over by UA2, though, where I will check next. 24 May 1650. 2-3 birds in the granary here again. Nobody in holes. 27 May 1415. Nobody anywhere.
