1977. Walter D. Koenig
Melanerpes formicivorus
Lambert
Hastings Reservation
24 September
1100. Counted stores: LFT: 14 (new)
"Nest T": 1 ("
HFT: 528 (many new- 3/4 to 1/2)
VO: 8 (new)
Total: 551
The only bird seen nearby was ♂ LP/M #114.
30 September
1830. ♀ Phe/M #283 seen here.
3 October
1140. Watching. ♂ LP/M #114 seen. A fair amount of chasing,
both inter- and intra-specific going on. The Jays, in particular,
are making off with lots of acorns from the area,
1150. ♂ ?/or- #284.
1156. ♂ Pub here in Valley Oak on HNHR side; chased Stellar Jay.
1214. Pub storing here now in VO.
1230. Occasional chases of other AW intruders going on. The
Jays (both flavors) still being chased a lot.
1245. Going to move hide and to check the net at A1. As in other
situations that I've seen like this, the woodpeckers are clearly
losing out to the Jays, of whom there are just plain too many
for them to effectively exclude.
1305. Back again. Jays are clearly coming to 2-3 Valley Oaks here
at the "corner" that are loaded with acorns.
1315. (♀) LP-WN/W) / Bile #283. ♂ 114. Pub. ♂ 284 after quite a while.
1405. I'm beginning to be convinced, having seen noone besides
these same 4 birds about 10 times each by now. Both ♂ 116 and
202 are somewhere else.
8 October
Set up for an ambush here last night, watching (all) 4 birds
go into the hole in the tree up from the old nest tree.
