1977 Walter Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Chongo (18 May) Hastings Reservation distinctive crown: 935. ①♀ub, back hawking in granary 940. ♀ub displaced an intruder twice, both times another u6 ♀. 942. ②♀ub landed in the granary with a large Apid in his bill, greeting the ♀. 945. ♀ chased a(nother) intruder over near the nest; ♂ still in granary. 950. ♀ and a 2nd♂ eating (drilling on) acorns now. 952.!! 2nd♂ is ③♂/yel-Blue #252; plus a 3rd♂ just landed, ♂da/ Red-ca #319! Far out! ♀ went to feed babies acorn bits. 1000. Both ♂ub and ②♂cs/wm-Red #234 came with gills-full of insects. 1015. I got another gillful of acorn as ♂ub returned with a gillful of insects. 1025. Several of the ♂♂ (319,252) are back in the granary. Pretty good, and I suspect that's everybody. Leaving. 28 May 1800. Came and banded the babies, all 4 of whom are in fine shape, as #368 to 371. 2 June 1215. Counted stores: 23! 2 July 800. Watching from hide. 820.
