1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Change Hastings Reservation 25 April 1715. Bird still in nest hole. Watching. 1730. 2 birds appeared briefly by the nest tree: ①♂ blue / #234 and a ②♀. 1815. That, apparently, was the only changeover. The few other calls heard were all over from the lower side of Buckeye Hill. 27 April 1800. Went out here to check the nest. An incubating bird was inside when I arrived, and the same 5 eggs were still present. 3 May 1730. Bird incubating. I didn't flush the bird to make sure (it was pretty cold out) but I couldn't hear any squeales. Hatching, however, should be in the next day or so. 5 May 1230. Calling up to the holes, a bird looked out of the hole above the nest hole rather than the nest itself, which was rather odd. I went up, however, and all 5 babies have indeed hatched, and probably last evening / this morning. The weather is horrible, though - cold, windy, and some drizzle, so rather than fiddle around with them too much I weighed them and returned them and left. 9 May 1735. Bird in nest hole - maybe they've survived the cold, wet weather after all. 17 May 1045. ! Bird in hole! 4 babies in hole! Doing fine! Were measured, etc. Eyes are just opening, Egg tooth still present, remiges / rectrices 3-4 mm long, not out of their sheaths yet. Incredible! 18 May 925. Watching.
