1977 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Big Tree Hastings Reservation (30 August) The season is definitely on: this group already has 40 (newly) stored Black Oak acorns in their granary. 18 September j404 seen at the spring this evening (possibly ♀) 2 October 1140. ♂u6, ♂y-/y- #108 here; watching 1156. ♂♂ Or/Blk #403; ♂♀ Red? banded, prob.#404. Still no decent look at 404, though I did for sure see a banded ♀ who I strongly suspect was indeed her. 14 November 1505. ♂♂Or/m #403 seen sitting in the main area in passing. ♂♂ Or-Brn/Or-Brn #104. 3 December 1520. ♂♂Or/m #403 down at the Arnold Spring. 1530. Watching. 1540. There she is: ♀ Red/Blue #404. 1545. I'm off to take a walk. 18 December Counted stores: 450. 31 December 1600. Saw ♂♂Or/Blk #403 here. No acorn sample taken - maybe later when I can replace the ones I take.
