1977 Walter D. Koening Melanerpes formicivorus Big Tree Hastings Reservation 6 May 1545. Nobody in hole. 10 May 1545. Bird in hole. Nest o.k. 13 May 1100. " " " ✓ Counted acorns: 73. 17 May 1645. Bird flushed from hole leaving screaming babies. I, needless to say, departed immediately (this is the only active nest left up here that I know of!) 21 May 1500. To my surprise (and delight!) - the nest is still on here; I couldn't tell positively, but through my mirror I could see 3 babies at least. 24 May ※ 1735. Babies heard loud and clear here. 27 May 1310. " " " " " 31 May 1130. " " " " " 5 June 1510. " " " " " 9 June 1430. Banded the babies, of whom there are 3, as #403, 404, 405. They are a little thin on this fogged-in day, but looking alright. 1910. Nestlings making lots of very-nearly fledged sounds. 15 June 1910. At least one nestling still in the hole peering out. Otherwise I checked the granary, which as expected is functionally pretty much depleted as far as I can tell - I did see 4 good acorns two however perhaps questionably so and the other 2 very low and more or less hidden in the granary. 17 June 1800. At least one or two of the fledglings are out making a racket in the main forest area here. One was still twittering like crazy from the nest hole. 3 July 730. I can still hear some fledgling sounds coming from this area.
