Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak
Hastings Reservation
(26 November) spring are in fact very small (there being 3 other 38 in the group at the time) my guess (and it is only that) is that this bird may actually have been a 3rd fledgling from the 1976 late spring-early summer nest (i.e. a sibling of 8321 and 9320). After all, I was only guessing that there were only 2 at the time. Thus, this bird will be considered fledged in July 1976 (remember, however, that I have no basis at this point on which to distinguish the 2 unbanded 38 I caught - but the origin of one is most likely this, the other is merely the other).
18 December Counted stores: Central area: 1579
Side area: 416
29 December Collected 100 acorns from limbs which had fallen during the storms of the last couple weeks. In all, this group lost about 150 acorns and about 250 holes (not as bad as it might have been, given the precariousness of some of the storage limbs here).
